Telling Your Story Through Your Wedding Decor

This post from two summers ago is one of my favorites, so I had to share it again! Sharing a little bit of your story in your wedding decor helps your guests get to know you, and it makes for some unforgettable details!

A few months ago, I wrote a post for Bridal Guide about how to make your wedding more memorable for yourself and your guests. One of the main things I talked about was the importance of incorporating your story - as individuals, as well as your story as a couple - into your wedding decor. Working things into your decor that are important to you is the best way for your guests to get to know your interests, hobbies or your love story. Plus, these kinds of details are the ones that will most likely be your favorites... You'll always look back on them fondly, because they revealed so much about this special time in your life!

Here's a little excerpt from my Bridal Guide article that will help you brainstorm what details you should work into your decor: "When you're planning the details for your own wedding, think about what makes you and your significant other unique, both individually and as a couple. Do you like to travel? Were you high school sweethearts? Are you diehard football fans? Are you major foodies? Are you in the same profession? Focus on what you both love, and get creative!"

These types of details are some of our favorites to incorporate into ceremonies and receptions at The Barn. Here are ways we've worked our couples' stories into their decor!

Danielle Davis Art/Photography, from Ani + Nathan's wedding. For couples who love to travel, a globe guestbook is a must! Ask your guests to sign on their favorite place they've ever visited!

Erika Dotson Photography, from Anita + Wesley's wedding. Wesley loves spearfishing (they even went on a spearfishing trip for part of their honeymoon!), which his awesome groom's cake reflected perfectly. It even had a little boat named Anita on top!

Pictures by Katie, from Kelsey + Gueorgui's wedding. This couple loves soccer, so the groom and his guys played a game during the reception!

Stephanie Parsley Photography, from Samantha + Danny's wedding. This couple's color palette actually told a part of their story. Their color scheme was seafoam, gold and cream, which was inspired by a headband that Danny gave Samantha in the early part of their relationship. While the color scheme isn't an obvious representation of their story, it sure made for a romantic, sweet story when their guests found out the meaning behind it!

Meredith Melody Photography, from Ashley + Ivan's wedding. Pretty much every detail from this wedding told about this couple's Latin heritage. They had papel picado, a Cuban cigar bar, and a Cuban band. They also gave cayenne pepper as favors!

Melissa McCrotty Photography, from mine + Richard's wedding. My husband and I love adventures, and we thought a beautiful way to incorporate that was to paint my bike blush and gold and put it at the entrance to our ceremony. This silly little detail meant so much to me!

Kimberly Brackins Creative Portraiture, from Jaclynn + Tyler's wedding. This bride and groom both went to the University of Arkansas, so it only made sense for them to call the Hogs with their bridal party after the reception. Woo pig sooie to that! Also, they're both obsessed with green, which showed throughout their decor.

Cottonwood Studios Worldwide, from Ally + Tyler's wedding. This couple had their church's band come out to The Barn for a praise and worship session during their ceremony. A detail like this tells so much about a couple and where their hearts are!

Shingleur Photography, from Lindsy + Keith's wedding. Lindsy is into barrel racing, and she used horseshoes from her barrel racing horse in her reception decor!

BnBauman Photography, from Chelsea + Logan's wedding. Logan was in dental school at the time of his wedding, so this precious tooth groom's cake was a must! He and his bride also gave toothbrushes and floss as favors.

Matt Emrich Photo, from Lyndsey + Brad's wedding. See that blue heart sewn into Lyndsey's gorgeous dress? It was from a piece of her great grandfather's shirt. What a special way to honor someone who was such a big part of your story!

Liz Chrisman Photography, from Cortney + Doug's wedding. This couple looooves them some Texas, so they had Texan details representing all over The Barn! Texas stars, steak rub favors from their favorite Texas steakhouse, and beer and wine, all from Texas. It was awesome!

BnBauman Photography, from Hayley + Zach's wedding. When she got married, Hayley worked at a bakery, so this couple's decor included lots of SWEET things... a candy buffet, glittery shoes for the bride that looked like they were covered in sprinkles (yum), and a sprinkle toss getaway!

Melissa McCrotty Photography, from Michelle + Chad's wedding. If you and your love were high school sweethearts, bring something from your high school days! These letterman jackets are a sweet nod to the early days of their relationship.

If you're planning your wedding, I hope this post helps you come up with some unique ways to put your story on display! After all, it's what makes you you. It's important!
